Penang Island is part of state of Penang, on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It was named Prince of Wales Island when it was occupied by the British East India Company on 12 August 1786 in the late 18th century. These token would identify a unit of goods as belonging to the East India Company, such that they could be successfully recovered and ownership proven after transport from India to Great Britain.
